ROCHESTER, NH-Warren A. Center, creator of the Thompson/Center Contender handgun as well as other firearms, died Monday, May 3, 2004, following a long period of failing health. He was 89 years old.

Center joined K.W. Thompson Tool Company in 1965, 2 years after the company relocated from New York to Rochester, New Hampshire. Thompson/Center Arms was formed almost immediately following Center's arrival at the company.

Center will always be known for his creation of the Contender pistol, thought by many to be the world's most versatile handgun, which he designed in his basement machine shop.

Center retired during the mid-1980s while serving as vice president of Thompson/Center Arms. After his retirement he enjoyed fishing, hunting and target shooting.
